How PEC credits solar

Pedernales Electric Cooperative serves much of the Hill Country west of Austin, including Spicewood, Dripping Springs, Marble Falls, Johnson City and parts of Cedar Park and Leander. PEC doesn't offer a solar-specific rebate. Interconnected members with systems under 50 kW:

  • use their own solar first, avoiding the full cost of that energy;
  • are billed for energy drawn from PEC at the normal rate; and
  • get a Sustainable Power Credit for surplus energy sent to the grid: $0.071921 per kWh as of March 1, 2026 (down from $0.082666). It applies to the Base Power Charge only, and unused credit expires at the end of each calendar year.

PEC also offers an Interconnect Time-of-Use option, where the credit varies by time of day and season, with a 12-month commitment.

What that means for you

Every kWh you use yourself is worth more than one you export. So for PEC members:

  • Size the system close to your annual use. Oversizing earns low-value credits that can expire.
  • Shift loads like pool pumps, laundry, EV charging and pre-cooling to sunny hours
  • West-facing panels can match late-afternoon AC load better
  • A battery can store midday surplus for evening use and gives outage backup (see home battery guide)

Fees and process

PEC charges a one-time $500 application fee for systems under 50 kW AC, plus any required upgrades. Your installer usually handles the application. Backup-only generators or batteries that don't run in parallel with the grid follow PEC's standby generation rules instead.
