Your utility decides your solar math
Two neighbors a few miles apart in the Austin area can see very different solar paybacks, because Austin Energy and Pedernales Electric Cooperative credit solar very differently.

| Upfront rebate | $4,000 residential solar rebate (rules apply) | No solar-specific rebate |
| Credit for solar | Value of Solar: 12.89¢ per kWh of all production (effective Oct 1, 2026) | Sustainable Power Credit: 7.1921¢ per kWh of exported surplus (effective Mar 1, 2026) |
| Credit expiration | Carries over month to month | Unused credit expires at year end |

Frequently asked questions
Which utility am I on?
Check your electric bill. Inside Austin city limits it's usually Austin Energy. Much of western Travis County, Hays, Blanco, Burnet and surrounding counties are served by Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC). Other areas are served by Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, Oncor, Georgetown Utility Systems or others.
Can I pick my electricity provider in Austin?
Generally no. Austin Energy and electric co-ops like PEC are not open to retail competition, so you can't switch to a solar buyback plan from another provider. Your utility's own solar credit applies.
Is there still a federal tax credit?
Not for homeowners who buy. The 30% residential credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. See Texas solar incentives.
